The European Union's ban on Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO) in September was one of the most significant global nail news stories of 2025. TPO is a photoinitiator that helps gel nail products cure and harden when exposed to UV or LED light. Although the chemical hasn’t been banned in the U.S., the ban prompted many global nail brands to change their formulas to comply with EU standards.

The MODERN SALON 100 is an annual recognition program from our sister title, and we always love to include talented nail technicians in the mix. These are some of the beautiful winter looks that the nail techs on our 2025 MS100 list have created in recent years.
Speaking of the MODERN SALON 100, an alum of the program and CT nail salon owner, Britt Higgins, was kind enough to share her experience attending the first Mani Mixer networking event. This gathering was organized by nail artist Dylan Pritchard with help from friends, and it proved to be a fun night of connection and artistry for these nail techs. This recent warning from the Nail Manufacturer Council on Safety, a branch of the Professional Beauty Association, cautions shoppers and technicians not to purchase or use products containing the toxic chemical methylene chloride. This cancer-causing chemical is often found in gel polish removers labeled “magic” or “burst.” Get the details and keep yourself and your clients safe.
In other nail safety news, federal research budgets for nail salon safety were cut this year, raising concerns across the industry.
