According to Allure magazine's June 2012 issue, one walk on the beach could scrub the shine right off a pedicure. With the right tricks, clients can keep theirs looking fresh through a beach vacation this summer. Pass on the following tips:

  1. Beware of sunscreen. Don't get us wrong, your toes need sunscreen just as much as the rest of your body. But your toenails don't. UV blockers in sunscreens can cause polish to turn yellow. Shield nails with your index finger when you spray your feet with sunscreen, or blot excess with a towel.

  2. Top it off. Most topcoats have unpronounceable ingredients, like benzophenone-1 and octocrylene, that absorb UV light and prevent it from breaking down the color. But the effectiveness wanes over time. Try Zoya Armor Top Coat or Orly Sunscreen for Nails, and reapply every other day.

  3. Fake it. If you notice your polish starting to dull despite your best efforts, rub in a drop of oil (body, hair, olive — it doesn't matter) to restore shine until your next dip or shower.
