If you’ve ever made a cherry pie, you might be familiar with the technique required to create nail tech Kazuko Tomiyama’s intricate lattice nail design. The crisscross pattern is delicate, admits the Tokyo-based tech. “But don’t worry,” she says. Although she makes many beautiful variations of this signature design, her basic technique is as follows:

1. Make the lattice ahead of time by cutting and interweaving strips of acrylic just before the product sets.

2. Apply a thin layer of acrylic to the entire nail.

3. Glue the lattice to the bed or tip of the nail, depending on the desired design, forming a chevron or reverse-chevron at the smile line.

4. Fill in the remaining portion of the nail with glitter acrylic.

5. Accent with rhinestones.
