The Arizona State Board of Cosmetology has proposed to completely update the rules for all segments of the cosmetology industry in that state. Says Sue Sansom, executive director of the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology, “We’ve reformatted and reorganized the current rules in what we consider to be clearer, more concise, and more understandable format.” According to Sansom, two proposed changes have drawn a great amount of public comment. One is a free increase, which the board hasn’t had for 12 years, and the other is the board’s proposal on school equipment and facilities.

According to an article in the Arizona Republic newspaper (September 11, 1995), school owners are upset that fees are slated for sharp increase, for example from $8 to $25 for renewal of a nail technician’s license. Sansom say that the board’s fees are ranked in the lower third of state board fees in the U.S. and that even with the increase, they would still be low compared with other states. The article also says that school operators said their school could be severely harmed by a proposal that would require them to allow 100 square feet of space for each of the first 50 students and 65 square feet for each additional student. Currently, schools are required to have 3,000 square feet overall and equipment for at least 20 students. Sansom says this proposal was based on statewide fire codes for vocational schools.
