How to Make More Money and Bring in New Clients: Throw a Party for the Kids

Children are getting more and more attention from the fashion industry these days, and some salons are finding that by giving parties for children, they have fun, make extra money, and get their name in front of the children’s mothers---who may turn into clients themselves. Jaime Schubert, owner of Je táime Nail and Body in Clarks Summit, Pa., allows clients to “rent” her shop for two hours on a Tuesday or Saturday to celebrate a birthday. The birthday girl and nine of her friends each receive a manicure, pedicure, and time to play games, open gifts, and eat cake. Schubert charges $150 per party and two staff members handle all the tiny fingers and toes.

Kiddy Kastle in Cypress, Calif., which specializes in haircuts and manicures for children, also offers “glamour parties” to girls for birthdays or special occasions. Owner and stylist Gloria Cipri-Kemer says she sends fliers, which include information about the parties, to her clients, many of whom are children. Glamour parties take place on Sunday in the winter, and Sunday through Tuesday in the summer. In each two-hour slot, six to 12 girls get a comb-out, makeup application, and manicure. Each receives an emery board and a hair bow to take home. Cipri-Kemer charges $25 per girl and more for extras such as videotaping and balloons.
