Judge Judy decides: Nail parlor or parish?

The subject of a People Magazine profile, hardnosed Judge Judy says she likes the perks that come with television, like people doing her hair and nails and powdering her nose.

Judy Sheindlin, better known as TV’s “judge Judy,” weighed in when two members of our profession brought their dispute to her courtroom. The case involves Jill, the owner of a salon who sued nail technician Erica for $2,000 in unpaid booth rental fees. Jill claimed that the defendant signed a $200-per month contract for a year, but left after only two months because she found a better job down the street.

But Erica claimed that Jill turned the salon into a church when she befriended a pastor who used the salon in a “crusade to help the outcasts of society.” Erica said that she started losing clients after the pastor started preaching to them while they were getting their nails done.

True to form, Judge snapped at both women while getting to the truth that revealed they both shared some of the blame. In her rasping Brooklyn accent, she scolded Jill, “Madam, you changed your establishment. You went from beauty, hair, and nails, to hair, nails, and redemption.” She then reminded Erica that contracts are binding: “Whatever you sign, you have to honor. My decision is with the plaintiff for $1,000.”
