When Maggie Franklin, owner of The Art of Nails in Visalia, Calif., went back to school a few years ago, her original intent was to study chemistry, since that’s an area of her job as a nail technician that she finds particularly fascinating.

“I ended up taking a geology class and I am hooked,” she says. “I still have a long way to go before I get a degree or can be called an expert, but for now I am absolutely in love with geology and the outdoorsy life.”

Her geological expeditions have included a field trip to California’s Mono Lake and to an area of Death Valley called the Devil’s Golf Course, where the rocks are covered with salt deposits from an ancient lake that evaporated long ago. “My clients tell me I’m nuts, but they always look forward to my next adventure,” says Franklin.
