The North Carolina State Board of Cosmetology says it supports a bill before the state legislature to delete an exemption in the 1982 nail technician licensing law. The current law requires nail technicians to be licensed only if they are working in a licensed establishment, and the only salons required to have an establishment license are “cosmetology” salons (where hair services are offered).

State board director Mary Quaintance supports the bill. “The purpose of the state board is to protect the health and safety of consumers. We can’t do that if anyone can do nails outside of a cosmetology establishment.”

To support the North Carolina bill, Quaintance recommends writing or calling your local representative and asking him or her to support the bill when it is voted on. Act quickly, because the bill may be voted on before the session ends in late June.
