LA Times Business section featured a profile of the business leader whose rapid rise to success was paralleled with the overall growth of the nail industry. “George Schaeffer didn’t know fake fingernails from real ones when he bought a dental supply company back in 1981. But he soon discovered that the acrylic material used to make dentures was a big seller with manicurists,” begins the article. Today, OPI has 135 products and last year posted more than $50 million in sales. Schaeffer revealed his plans for the future which include buying several buildings adjacent to OPI’s nearly 200,000 square-foot complex in N. Hollywood, Calif., and capitalizing on the growth in men’s products, spa treatments, and pedicures.

OPI Products made a guest appearance this season on the hit ABC sitcom “The Hughleys.” In an episode which features Hughleys star John Henson getting his first manicure, several of OPI’s top-selling products, including Avoplex Moisture Replenishing Lotion, Avoplex Nail and Cuticle Oil Treatment, and Swiss Blue Liquid Hand Soap were displayed on the salon set as they were used on the star. “We work closely with production companies to provide them with the proper nail products and instructions on how to use them,” Says OPI’s Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. Tweezerman shears were also prominently displayed in this episode.
