Polish With a Precious Purpose

Each color in Sherwin Hora’s new E.G.O Lacquers polish line holds a deeply personal meaning for her. “My polish line was created with a purpose. It’s aimed at raising money and awareness for illnesses such as Group B Strep, HIV, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease,” says the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.-based nail tech. Twenty percent of all sales goes to fighting these illnesses.

Nail tech Sherwin Hora was inspired by her daughter to create the E.G.O polish line.

E.G.O’s story begins in 2011, when Hora brought her 5-week-old daughter Jaedha to the hospital. She had become alarmed when Jaedha’s non-stop crying turned into a wail. “The nurse took her temperature and determined it was too high for a child that age, so we were quickly admitted,” says Hora. “The first doctor we saw ordered pain medication and made plans to send us home. But later another doctor examined Jaedha and realized she would scream at the touch of a finger. Everything moved very quickly from that point —  antibiotics, catheter, spinal fluid, blood samples, etc.”  It turns out that Hora had brought her daughter to the hospital in the nick of time. “I learned Jaedha had GBS — Group B Strep — a bacteria that causes meningitis, which can be fatal to newborns.”

Today Jaedha is a healthy 4-year-old who is very loving, very shy, and fond of animals both real and stuffed. But Hora hasn’t forgotten this devastating experience. “I was inspired by Jaedha to launch a polish line when I realized how much she loves getting her nails polished,” says Hora. E.G.O stands for Every Girls Obsession.

Jaedha models the yellow polish named in her honor.

She named the yellow shade Jaedha Adores, since yellow is the color for GBS awareness. The line also includes Sincerely Rachelle,  a blue named after a close family friend who battled brain cancer. (Blue is the color for brain cancer awareness.) A soon-to-be introduced purple, called Grandma’s Glasses, will raise money for Alzheimer’s disease, which Hora’s grandmother is currently battling. She also plans to add a red for HIV awareness.
