State legislatures are now on session. Various bills have been introduced that, if passed, would affect nail technicians and salon owners in several states. The following are bills currently being considered.

State legislatures are now on session. Various bills have been introduced that, if passed, would affect nail technicians and salon owners in several states. The following are bills currently being considered.

Alaska … House Bill 73 requiring licensing of manicurist was introduced.

Connecticut … House Bill 5152 would subject all hair, nail, and skin care practitioners, including those in non-licensed salons, to the same sterilization standards… Senate Bill 550 would require licensing of manicurist.

Illinois … House Bill 578 would establish an apprenticeship program for nail technicians, barbers, cosmetologists, and estheticians… The cosmetology and nail technicians licensing act under Sunset review the grandfather clause for nail technicians has been extended to December 31, 1995.

Indiana … House Bill 1529 would allow a graduated fee schedule for renewal of license… Barber shops could employ licensed cosmetologist… Senate Bill 451 would require continuing education units for license renewal.

Maine … House Bill 51 would allow cosmetics sold only to licensed beauty professionals to be exempted from federal cosmetics labeling laws… House Bill 52 would allow cosmetology services to be performed in licensed establishments only, except in emergencies.

Nebraska … Legislative Bill 852 would regulate nail technicians, instructors, schools, and salons.

New Jersey … Assembly Bill 253 would create a skin care-specialty license… Assembly Bill 1488 would permit nails-only salon… Assembly Bill 1486 would permit manicurist to remove body hair.

New York … Assembly Bill 370 would require appearance-enhancement establishments to post service price.

North Dakota … House Bill 1407 would create master esthetician, master manicurist, and homebound licenses… Senate Bill 2226 requiring continuing education for cosmetologist failed.

South Dakota … House Bill 1185 would regulate body piercing

Virginia … Senate Joint Resolution 141 request that the state department of health study the practice of cosmetic tattoos.

Washington … Senate Bill 5051 waives the high school-graduate requirement for cosmetology students with disabilities… Senate Bill 5741 would require certification and continuing education for permanent-color technicians and tattoo artists.
