Teen People says that teens are spending a fair amount of their allowances in salons.

It’s no secret that teens have more disposable income that any other age group — a recent study by Ohio State University for the U.S. Department of Labor found that teens receive, on average, $50 in spending money each week from their parents.

What is surprising is how much of it they’re spending in salons. In a November 2000 survey of 9,000 13- to 21-year-old trendsetters by Teen People magazine, 55% of them reported visiting a salon every four to eight weeks, with over half of them receiving at least two services per visit. More than one out of four of the teens reported receiving regular manicures.

Teens also make ideal retail clients: More than half the respondents told Teen People they spend $5-$10 each month on salon-brand nail products; 22% said they spend $10-$20; and 16% said they spend more than $20. Their favorite nail brands? OPI, Nicole by OPI, and Orly.
