What Nail Techs Need to Know About Spray Tanning

“Spray tanning is the perfect add-on service for nail techs,” says Tiffany Ngo, founder of TanEm ProBronze (www.tanemprobronze.com). “We hold our clients’ hands, chat with them about their beauty issues, and hear all about their upcoming special events. So instead of sending them to another salon or spa for tanning, we can offer them a one-stop spot.”

Of course, a certain amount of space and privacy are required before you can get started. “Space requirements are minimal for spray tanning and can start with a pop-up tent and mobile machine,” says Ngo. “Eventually, you might graduate to a full-service salon setup with all-in-one booths that provide privacy, lighting, ventilation, and an extraction fan. Another option is to perform the service in the client’s home.”

There are no state licensing requirements for spray tanning, but Ngo recommends becoming certified by the makers of the product brand you choose. Once you are proficient in spray tanning, the actual spray time is approximately 10 minutes. She advises booking 30 minutes for the service, however, so your client can check in, have a consultation, and change clothes.

Marketing materials are often available from the tanning companies, but it’s the job of the nail tech to remind her clients about the benefits of keeping out of the sun, yet maintaining a consistent healthy glow. Ngo suggests focusing on convenience when you make your pitch: “We can complete your holiday/wedding/graduation look in one booking by providing high-quality sunless tanning along with your manicure/pedicure service.”

In addition to service income, tanning products make good retail items. “The beautiful thing about self-tanning products is that clients can continue to keep both their sunless tan and natural tan looking amazing at home with self-tanning lotions and tan extenders,” she says.
