Whisper vs. Whisper MiniVent: Choosing the Right Source Capture System for Your Salon

Both systems capture vapors and dust right at the nail table. The difference is where that air goes next, and that one detail can decide whether your salon passes inspection.

If you've decided your salon needs source capture, you're already ahead of most of the industry. The next question is which system fits your space. Aerovex Systems builds two source capture lines for nail salons: the Whisper™ and the Whisper MiniVent™. They look alike at the table and protect your breathing zone the same way. What sets them apart is what happens to the air after it's pulled away from you and your client.

This guide walks through how each system works, which salons each one is built for, and how to pick the right setup for your stations.

Why Source Capture Comes First

Source capture ventilation pulls vapors and dust away at the point where they're created, before they reach your breathing zone. That's the beach-ball-sized space directly in front of your face, and it's where exposure happens.

Room air purifiers and source capture work best together. A room purifier cleans the general salon air and catches the vapors and dust that escape the table, but on its own it acts too late: by the time contaminants drift across the room, you and your client have already breathed them in. Source capture stops exposure at the table, and the room purifier handles what's left. That's why Aerovex Systems offers packages that bundle a source capture system with a room air purifier built for salons.

Both the Whisper and the Whisper MiniVent stop exposure right at the station. Each is a compact unit that sits at the table, with a capture inlet positioned close to the client's hands. The question is what each one does with the air it collects.

The Whisper™: Filtered Air, No Ductwork

The Whisper Source Capture System captures vapors and dust at the table, runs that air through multi-stage HEPA and activated carbon filtration, and returns the cleaned air to the room.

The HEPA stage traps fine particulate like e-file dust. The activated carbon stage adsorbs chemical vapors and odors from monomers, gel products, and acetone. Because the air is cleaned and recirculated, there's no hose to route and no hole to cut in a wall.

The Whisper is a strong fit if:

•       Your local code doesn't require source capture exhaust to be vented outdoors

•       You rent a suite or booth where you can't modify walls, windows, or ceilings

•       You need a setup you can move between stations or take with you if you relocate

•       You want maximum flexibility in where the station sits in the room

The Whisper MiniVent™: Built for Outdoor Venting

The Whisper MiniVent Source Capture System captures vapors and dust at the table the same way. Instead of returning the air to the room, it exhausts it outdoors through 10 feet of included exhaust hose, at no extra charge. Dust is caught in an internal high-capacity filter bag before the air leaves the unit, and nothing is recirculated back into the salon.

That design matters for code compliance. Where the International Mechanical Code (IMC) is adopted, nail salons are required to have source capture at each manicure and pedicure station, exhausting at least 50 CFM per station to the outdoors. The MiniVent delivers 265 CFM in its single-station configuration and 132 CFM per station in its dual-station configuration, well above that minimum.

The Whisper MiniVent is a strong fit if:

•       Your city or county has adopted the IMC or a similar code requiring outdoor exhaust

•       You're opening a new salon, remodeling, or applying for a permit and need a setup inspectors will sign off on

•       You have access to an exterior wall, window, or ceiling route for the exhaust hose

•       You want vapors physically removed from the building, not just filtered

The MiniVent gives you outdoor venting without the bulk, noise, and cost of a traditional ducted exhaust renovation.

How to Decide: Four Questions

1. What does your local code require? This is the deciding factor. Call your city or county building department and ask whether they've adopted the IMC and whether nail station exhaust must be vented outdoors. If it must, the MiniVent is the system built for it. If not, either system will protect your breathing zone.

2. Can you vent to the outside? Look for an exterior wall, a window, or a ceiling path the exhaust hose can reach. If outdoor venting is required but your space has no route, talk to your landlord and building department before you buy anything.

3. Do you own, lease, or rent a suite? Owners and long-term tenants can usually make a small exterior penetration for the MiniVent. Suite and booth renters often can't alter the space, which makes the Whisper the practical choice where code allows.

4. Are you permitting a new build or remodel? If an inspector will be looking at your ventilation, plan around the MiniVent from the start. It's far easier to design the station layout around an exhaust route than to retrofit one later.

If you're still unsure, Aerovex Systems offers a free consultation with a salon ventilation expert to help you sort through your local requirements and station layout before you order.

Single-Station or Dual-Station?

Both the Whisper and the Whisper MiniVent come in single-station and dual-station configurations.

Single-station serves one nail table. It's the right choice for solo techs, suite renters, and salons where stations are spread apart. The single-station setup puts 194 CFM at one table with the Whisper, or 265 CFM with the MiniVent.

Dual-station serves two tables from one unit, with 88 CFM per station on the Whisper and 132 CFM per station on the MiniVent. It's a cost-effective way to cover side-by-side stations, and on the MiniVent it means one exhaust route instead of two.

For larger salons, plan on one system per station or per pair of stations. Several smaller units placed right at the work will outperform one large unit trying to cover the whole room.

Rounding Out Your Protection

Whichever system you choose, source capture is Zone 1 of Aerovex Systems' 3-Zone Protection Model. It handles the breathing zone, but air currents and client movement mean some vapors and dust will still escape into the room.

•  Zone 2, the room: A salon room air purifier uses activated carbon to scrub residual vapors, odors, and VOCs from the general salon air.

•  Zone 3, the building:Dust Plus® HVAC Filters replace standard building filters, using an electrostatically charged, carbon-lined design to keep dust and vapors from cycling back through your heating and cooling system.

Many Aerovex packages pair a Whisper or Whisper MiniVent with a wall-mounted air purifier, so Zones 1 and 2 are covered in a single purchase. For salons that want complete coverage, Aerovex Systems also offers full 3-Zone Protection, covering the breathing zone, the room, and the building.

The Bottom Line

The Whisper and the Whisper MiniVent protect your breathing zone the same way. The right choice comes down to your local code and your space. If outdoor exhaust is required, or you're heading into a permit or inspection, choose the MiniVent. If it isn't required and you need a flexible, no-install setup, the Whisper delivers clean air at the table without touching your walls.

Either way, you're protecting your lungs, your skin, your clients, and your career.
