As a longtime fan of nail art collective Kleur, I was excited to find that they opened a salon in Long Beach, Calif., to showcase their artwork and eclectic style.
I was in beautiful Toronto for four days visiting salons and attending the Canadian Hairdresser magazine show. I learned that our salon neighbors to the north share a lot of the same joys and frustrations in their work as you do. Although still not as prominent, discount salons are redefining the nail industry there as well.

I found Be Beauty by posting a message on the NAILS Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nailsmag) that I was looking for a salon in San Diego. Nail tech Brian Garces messaged me back to come to the salon where he works. When I looked it up online and saw it was in a cute little 1920s-era bungalow, I was sold.
What’s better than getting to go to salons all over the country in the name of work? Getting to go with the team! The NAILS editors were in Dearborn, Mich., and we went out before the show to do some errands (like shoe shopping) and get everything ready for this year’s awards finalists.
