When mixing glitters, what gives more of the 3-D look?

February 18, 2010

You know how sometimes we mix several glitters together and they make that magical combination that just pops, and other times the results are just so-so? What makes the difference? What gives more of the 3-D look? I thought I read somewhere that adding either the crystal/white or a light shade to a darker shade makes it stand out better. I can only use gel so the pre-mixed with powder combinations won’t work for me.

Answer

As a rule of thumb, lighter colors highlight and darker colors contour (make things look deep). Decorators and painters use this when painting. They make a room look larger by painting the focal wall dark, or the background deep.

Putting light glitter on a dark surface makes the light-colored glitters stand out against the dark surface, making them pop. So mixing very light and very dark glitter pieces together help give the nail that 3-D look. — Norma Sproles is a guest artist and educator for OPI.

I am an apprentice in a natural nail salon. Sometimes I get requests for nail art. I would love to learn how to do different nail designs, but I am a beginner. I live in Virginia and there are never nail seminars or lectures or even hands-on classes here. Do you have any suggestions on learning nail art designs when there is no one in my area to teach it? Watching videos is good but sometimes you just need hands-on.
