The Brookhaven location of Atlanta’s Natural Body Spa & Shop chain has just been awarded Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program. The first spa in the Southeast constructed and designed in accordance with the highest level of LEED specifications, the location features both a Natural Body Spa & Shop and a 10TEN Nail Bar.
A founding member of the Green Spa Network, a resource for spa owners to learn more about implementing environmentally responsible programs, Natural Body is dedicated to environmental stewardship. “Reducing our impact on the earth is always at the forefront of our thoughts when designing a new spa location” says Cici Coffee, founder and CEO of Natural Body Spa & Shop.
The spa and nail bar are located in a high-density, mixed-use development, chosen specifically for its proximity to a wide variety of resources such as mass transit, shopping amenities, and green space. For the spa itself, efforts were made to incorporate regional building materials into the design of the location, including service room floors crafted of 50% post-industrial materials as well as flooring created from wood reclaimed from a 100-year-old Georgia barn.
Other steps to ensure the facility functions at the highest environmental efficiency include using tankless water heaters and Energy Star washers and dryers, as well as the signature 10TEN alabaster foot basins that use half the amount of water as standard industry basins. Electrical power is offset with hydro power credits, a renewable power source, and LED light bulbs and fluorescent lighting are used as low-energy options.
