The Beauty Bus Foundation offers its services to give chronically and terminally ill patients and their caregivers a chance to unwind and be pampered — all free of charge. The Los Angeles-based non-profit organization was started by Wendy Levine and her cousin Alicia in honor of Levine’s sister, Melissa, who died of a degenerative neuromuscular disease.  Inspired by the positive effects that Melissa had experienced from salon visits, the two cousins decided to form the foundation to aid patients who do not have access to a traditional salon or spa. The beauty bus offers in-home salon visits and pop-up salons in hospitals or community centers, and serves all ages and genders. Clients’ ages range from 1 to 101 years old and approximately 25% of their clients are men.

All the volunteers for the Beauty Bus Foundation are licensed professionals who provide services such as facials, hair styling, and manicures to patients free of charge. Housebound patients in the network receive one beauty appointment per month, and all patients can participate in the “Bag of Beauty” program, in which they receive a bag of various beauty products totaling $150.
