It is especially gratifying, they all agreed, to be presented with a Who’s Who Readers’ Choice Award because the honor comes from the people who actually use the products – the nail technicians themselves. The 1991 Who’s Who Readers’ Choice Awards were presented on behalf of the readers of NAILS Magazine at a black-tie event at the Los Angeles Airport Hyatt on March 23, 1991.
Tom Scandlyn and Adrea Naime were all decked out for the evening’s festivities.
NAILS editor and the evening’s co-host Cyndy Drummey thanked everyone for their participation in the event and noted that the audience included several industry leaders who were not among the nominees, as well as representatives from as far away as the United Kingdom, an indication that when the readers of NAILS Magazine speak, the industry listens. More than recognition for the best products or the best marketing, the awards are, Drummey explained, designed to encourage reader interaction both with industry marketers and the magazine.

Jack Megna, president of Backsratchers, beckoned his son Mike to stand up and take a bow after the company received its third award of the evening. Megna also gave thanks to Backscratchers’ European distributors who were with them that evening.
Norm Freed, a business consultant for the beauty industry once again co-hosted the awards. Peter Grimes, founding publisher of NAILS, took a few minutes to acknowledge all those involved in producing the magazine and putting on the trade shows.
Liza Modiano of Calvert International thanked everyone who voted to make Calvert a winner in the Sanitation/Sterilization category.
Ed Bobit, chairman of Bobit Publishing, which publishes NAILS, thanked all the nail industry luminaries in attendance.

When all the statuettes were presented, all the staffs thanked, and all the congratulations exchanged, guests loosened their black ties and hit the dance floor.
At what obviously the end of the evening, the mood was decidedly relaxed. From left to right, Susan Grimes (“Corey” to her friends, but better known as Mrs. Peter Grimes); Arthur Cafaro of Joyart Jewelry, whose funny quips are responsible for all the smiles in this photograph; Annie Gorton, assistant editor of NAILS Magazine and the evening’s photographer, Joyce Bogen of Joyart Jewelry., who never seemed to run out of energy; and the bejeweled Helen Vanegas, western regional sales manager for NAILS Magazine.
And, true to form, despite the hearty partying, exhibitors were up bright and early Sunday for the NAILS LAX Show. After all, this is an industry that likes to party, but one that always knows when to get down to business.
