Raising Breast Cancer Awareness in Your Salon

Sell Merchandise. The Save the Ta-tas Foundation (www.savethetatas.com) is committed to fighting cancer at every stage — including education, prevention, research, community outreach, and emotional support for those struggling with the disease. Meggan Anderson of Nail’D By Meggan in Dreamz Day Spa and Salon in Burley, Idaho, sells Save the Ta-tas gear in the salon with a portion of every sale going to support the foundation. “We do a catalog orders. I started last summer and it was a hit; my clients and other salon clients are very supportive. All nine of the girls here wear our shirts every Friday for the month of October — a local bar bought shirts and hoodies to wear for the month as well.”

Donate Funds. Throughout the month of October, Kristine Hyde of Gel Nails by Kristine in Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada, offers clients breast-cancer-pink gels and either handpainted gel breast cancer ribbons or water decals that she made. Both the pink gel and the ribbons are free of charge all month. “At the end of October, I donate 25% of all money I have made that month to the Alberta Cancer Foundation as an anonymous donation.” Hyde’s generous actions honor her grandmother, who succumbed to the disease in 2007. “She was the strongest woman I know, and she was felled by a horrible disease. I’m no scientist, and I have no cures, but if I can help in even a small way, I want to,” says Hyde.

Donate Time and Touch. Shannon Byrd of The Nail Designer @ Neon Beach in Albemarle, N.C., graciously donated her services to those living with breast cancer. “Last year, I went to our local breast cancer center and provided them with free coupons to give out to their patients,” says Byrd. “Anyone who had breast cancer previously or was currently going through breast cancer was given a coupon to come get a free Breast Cancer Mani in Pink with a handpainted ribbon on them.” This special offer was a great success. “I’m passionate about this because I lost an aunt to breast cancer when she was only 32 and I was never able to meet her, so she is my inspiration,” she says.

Give locally. For the past 10 years, Kerry Webber of Forever-French Nail Systems has offered pink glitter tips or a hand-painted pink ribbon at her salon. All profits are donated to a local family of the salon’s choosing. The salon buys selected families “Stop and Shop” or Wal-Mart gift cards.  “I have always felt the need to help people right in our backyard,” says Webber.
