She’s a Fan of Her Vacuum

Cash’s home-made system uses flexible hose intended for a car to ventilate her table area.

Cash’s home-made system uses flexible hose intended for a car to ventilate her table area.

With the help of her handy husband, salon owner Ruthella Cash took an ordinary vacuum cleaner and turned it into an environmentally friendly ventilation system. Cash, owner of The Nail Goddess in Carrollton, Ga., says her one of a kind air filter is one reason clients come to her peaceful 14 by 14 foot home based salon.

The heart of the system is a “shop-style” vacuum (it must be a least 2.0 horsepower, she advises) that accommodates HEPA filters. To turn the vacuum into a ventilation system, the couple used insulation, PVC pipe, flexible hose (the kind that connects your car’s air filter to the manifold), tape, miscellaneous hardware, and a dryer vent opening. To keep things quiet, Cash houses the unit under the salon in a special insulated box made by her local heating and air conditioning people. “Not only does it ventilate the salon, it filters the air that goes back outside. With an attachment, I can also use the system as a vacuum to keep the salon free of dust and dirt.”
