According to research published in the journal Oncogene, a team of researchers from Oxford University and the University of Nottingham have found a new way to slow the growth of the most aggressive type of breast cancer. They found that using a drug called JQ1 alters how cancer cells respond to hypoxia (low oxygen), which is found in more than 50% of breast tumors and most commonly in the form of the disease that is hardest to treat, triple-negative breast cancer. The study results showed that JQ1 slowed tumor growth and limited the number of blood vessels that were produced. The drug works by stopping cancer cells from adapting to a lack of oxygen. Eating a Mediterranean diet may help prevent breast cancer from returning, according to a study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The trial, which was conducted in Piacenza, Italy, compared the outcomes for 307 women who had been treated for early breast cancer. One group of 199 women ate a Mediterranean diet, which consisted of four portions of vegetables, three pieces of fruit, and one serving of grains a day, plus four or more weekly servings of fish, some red meat, and large quantities of olive oil. They were allowed up to one alcoholic drink a day. The other group of 108 women were simply given advice on healthy eating by a dietician and asked to eat their normal diet. After three years, 11 women from the group eating a normal diet suffered a return of their breast cancer, the researchers found, while none of those eating a Mediterranean diet did.
