June 21 marks the first day of the sunny season this year, and that means — happily — that pedicure sales will go up. While most clients are conscious of the condition of the toenail polish peeking out of their sandals, they are often less aware of how their feet may be damaged by excessive sun exposure. Remind clients to apply sunscreen not only to their faces, backs, arms, and legs, but also to their feet. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons suggests people regularly check their feet for symptoms of skin cancer, like abnormal-looking moles or freckles. These can appear even under toenails or on the soles of the feet. Educate clients about their skin’s health, and if you detect an abnormal area of pigmented skin on their foot when they come in for their regular pedicure, suggest a visit to the doctor to be safe. Also consider adding sunscreen to your retail section and encourage regular application when wearing open shoes.
