Forming the ’50s: Who Won and Who’s Packing Up Their Brushes

Posted October 18, 2013

challenge5_lauren

This week’s winner is Lauren. The judges loved your 1950s pin-up girls with the surprise undersides. Many of our judges, including NSI’s Malinda Haggerty, commented on how well you used nail forms to create separate looks on each side of the nail. We love that you created a different pin-up look for each nail and that you really made them fit naturally on the shape of your nails. What a great representation of the ’50s! (Click here to see her a full step-by-step tutorial of Lauren’s winning look.)

Here are just a few more of the great comments you earned:

Gelishs Danny: Awesome pin-ups and patterns! Very 1950s-appropriate.

NAILS’ editor Hannah: I love your sculpting technique to have a top and an underside color. Your handpainted pin-up girls are so cute and I love that you can still see the sculpted glitter fades under your illustrations. Love the secret flip-side of the nails too.

NAILS’ graphic designer Yuiko: I love that Lauren utilized both sides of the tips to create her artwork! The different pinup girls and the bright warm colors are very appropriate for the ’50s theme, and the long almond-shaped tips were a great canvas choice!

NAILS managing editor Sree: Lauren is a consistently strong competitor. These nails are awesome. She makes me want to polish up my undersides (though I could never do as good of a job as she does).

NAILS’ group publisher Cyndy: Well thought out, from the nail shape to the topside images, to the fabric looks underneath the nail. A beautiful take on the theme.

NAILS’ art director Danielle: I LOVE it! This screams the 1950s — the shape of the nails, the pin-up-girls, and the patterns. You really took it to the next level by painting on the underside of the nails.

NAILS’ graphic designer Kim: Beautiful nail shape, awesome concept carried out well!
