Nail Techs Try Their Hand at Journalism

In our industry it’s pretty common to wear a lot of hats to get the job done; most techs also act as their own bookkeeper, PR person, and head of maintenance. But here’s a new one: At Coatroom — a new nails and waxing salon in Arlington, Va. — salon staffers are called upon to write and produce their very own magazine. The publication — not surprisingly called Coatroom — is available for clients to peruse while soaking in the pedicure tub or waiting for their nails to dry.

“The magazine is a collaborative project — an effort across the whole team,” says Coatroom’s owner Justin Cook. “We thought it would be a fun project, and our goal is to provide a new type of salon experience, so curating our own magazine for our guests just made sense.”

Cook’s hope is to create a community hub for the neighborhood by covering topics like nail and beauty trends, local events, in-store promotions, and a rotating “Girl’s Night Out” feature highlighting the D.C.-metro area’s diverse fashion and beauty community.
