What is the recommended usage of cuticle oil?

February 22, 2005 | Bookmark +

One tech I work with is an advocate of daily use of cuticle oil. She claims it prevents acrylic lifting. The other tech is against daily use. She claims it causes acrylic to lift. Who is correct? What is the recommended usage of cuticle oil?

Answer

The answer really boils down to what acrylic system is being used. In the early days of artificial nails, when MMA was used, acrylic was very porous. You couldn’t even use hand lotion or they would lift. The newest generations of artificial nail products are virtually non-porous and therefore we can use lotions, creams, and oils without worrying about lifting. If used daily, cuticle oil will not cause or prevent lifting. What it will do is keep the nail plate flexible so that it does not pull away from the product. It will, of course, help to keep the skin and cuticles soft and smooth. -- Sue Irwin

How can I prevent lifting when my client's hands are constantly in water?

I have a client who is in the medical field so her hands are constantly in water. She has me keep the length of her acrylic nails short. No matter what I do, she always has at least one nail that comes off, and she always has lifting and gets water under the acrylic. I prep the nails correctly, I have a cuticle bit to clean the cuticle area, and I wipe the nail with alcohol, dehydrate the nail, and prime the nail. What should I do?
