The country’s economic woes have touched the beauty industry less than many other industries. One way to show your gratitude and give back to the community that supported you, says Tamara Jercha, is to help unemployed individuals in your area. Jercha, president of the National Association of Eco-Friendly Salons & Spas (www.naefss.org), suggests the following ways your salon can help:

> Offer a free class for styling and make-up application appropriate for a successful job interview.

> During the class draw names for free services such as haircuts and manicures.

> Get the community involved; hold a “cut-a-thon” and offer to match money earned to provide free haircuts for unemployed job seekers.

> Ask your vendors for support in the form of free trial-size products.

> Partner with local businesses to create a “Get Hired” event.  Maybe the human resources manager at a local bank can offer free interviewing advice; a local clothing store can offer advice on dressing and accessorizing for successful interviews; and of course your salon or spa can offer grooming and make-up tips.
