The SkillsUSA practical applications evaluate the contestants’ abilities to perform the most common nail services in salons.

At the 2013 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference, the best students compete for medals. In the nail care category, contestants are evaluated on oral communication skills, acrylic application, tip and wrap application, nail polish application, nail art, and a written exam (which consists of proper sanitation, chemical safety, salon procedures, and more). Three students each at the college and the high school levels take home medals in this annual trade competition.
