In-Progress Nail Art Documentary Needs Funding

by NAILS Magazine | March 14, 2012 | Bookmark +

While backstage at the CND Shellac Couture event at America’s Beauty Show, I was thrilled to meet Ashley Crowe, better known as Astrowifey (who runs a nail art blog by the same name), a phenomenal nail artist from Chicago. (You can see her work in NAILS’ Holiday Red-dy Nail Art photo gallery.)

She casually mentioned that she’d recently been filmed for a nail art documentary, and I was captivated. Between coffee table books and museum installations about nail art and now a documentary, I’m thrilled that our industry is getting more and more positive attention.

Of course, I had to learn more about this documentary. As it turns out, it’s by a filmmaker named Brass and the documentary is still in progress. On her website, Brass says, “Enter the house of manicures in my newest documentary ‘NAILgasm’, exploring how nail art has evolved from the streets to high fashion and has exploded to everywhere in between in just the past few years. I plan to research and share the recent demand for nail designs and also focus on the extraordinary creativity of each nail artist I interview. This will include interviews with leading luxury nail stylists, world famous nail art enthusiasts, plus independent nail artists and pop culture journalists from areas such as Los Angeles, Oakland, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, London and Japan and beyond.”

You can watch the trailer on NAILStv.

It definitely looks promising. On Monday, the filmmaker announced that she still needs to travel for more nail artist interviews (she’s hoping to get to Japan and Russia, among other places) and doesn’t have the funds to do so. If you’d like to support this nail art documentary, you can donate on the project’s Kickstarter page. Even $1 will help this film get completed.
