Kendra Is Frustrated With Nail School

Editor’s Note: Kendra’s been busy over the last few weeks, but she’s here to check in with us before the holidays.

Sorry I haven’t written in a few weeks. Last week we had seven chapters to get through. That’s seven packets of homework and seven tests! So now I’m able to catch you all up on what’s been going on. Here is what happened over the last 3 weeks...

We finally got out of the combination class with the cosmetologists and started in our own class. Sadly, everything continued to go downhill from there. I have been very disappointed with the way they run the nail program at my school. Our teacher has only demoed a manicure and a pedicure. There hasn’t been a demo on acrylic or how to properly dehydrate or prime the nail before application. She actually tells us to practice acrylic and doesn’t help any of the students. I have seen students ruin their $40 CND brushes that they received in their kit. Monomer drips into the polymer and clots at the bottom of the container and hardens acrylic in their brushes. How are we supposed to be successful nail technicians in the industry?

Wednesday and Thursday we were “supposed” to train on the e-file so we can get certified in Colorado. The certificate requires eight hours of training, and we have only received 2 1/2 hours. We started by watching a video of the e-file we got in our kits. Then it was on to practical work. Guess what? No demos, no nothing. We were just told basically to figure it out. Honestly if we were working on actually clients, each client would have been burned or injured by the way the other students were using the e-file incorrectly.

I know I have more experience than the other girls in my class since I am licensed in another state, but I still have a lot to learn. I have learned the majority of what I know from educational videos and trade magazines due to my other school in Arizona being exactly the same as this one. I have tried to help the other students, but then I feel like I am stepping on my teacher’s toes.

With all that has been going on, I have decided that my goal after school and getting my license is to get all the training and extra classes I can. Hopefully I can become an educator and a mentor for a company. Also I am going to start on my resume and give it to my school. They need a teacher who is passionate about her job, making sure all the students stay up-to-date with current trends and so on. They all deserve proper training and hands-on experience.

Hopefully next week will be better. We are going to get our certification in waxing and hopefully I will be able to actually work on things and take pictures for all of you.
