How can I get an arch on a flat nail?

How can I get an arch on a flat nail when doing an acrylic natural nail overlay without getting my finished product too thick? The nail always looks like it is too thick with too much acrylic at the free edges as well as at the cuticle.

It's all about placement. I like to apply my pink or clear at the cuticle area first and work my way to the free edge using two to three balls. This helps me keep the cuticle area thin. Then I place a ball of acrylic at the stress area (the middle third of the nail). Make sure you look from the side when you place the ball down so you can see where you want it to go and keep the product away from the cuticle area and free edge.  – Mary Seitzinger, Nail Sensation, Columbus, Ohio
